Book Review: "52 Little Lessons from Les Miserables" by Bob Welch

From the back cover:
“In 52 Little Lessons from Les Miserables, author Bob Welch illuminates the spiritual themes woven throughout Victor Hugo’s magnificent story of anguish, mercy, suffering, and forgiveness in the face of adversity. Through this collection of insights, we remember Jean Valjean’s transformation, the bishop’s compassion, and the redemption that flows from it. We are reminded that even the coldest heart can thaw, and that mercy can transform us all from the worst to the best versions of ourselves. Through the individual plights of the bishop, Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, Javert, Marius, and Eponine, Welch reminds us that Christlike love, at its purest, restores us all in beautiful ways.”

I have to be perfectly honest – I’ve never read Les Miserables, nor have I ever seen any of the movie versions or the musical, either. However, none of that mattered when I began reading the book 52 Little Lessons from Les Miserables by Bob Welch. Author Welch takes the many beautiful facets of the Les Mis story and creates a tapestry of 52 small, digestible life “lessons” by weaving these facets together with Bible-based spiritual parallels, showing Victor Hugo’s epic masterpiece for what it truly is - a wonderful, heartfelt story of brokenness, redemption, and faith.

In my personal opinion, the great thing I discovered in reading 52 Little Lessons from Les Miserables is that this book contains undoubted universal appeal: whether or not a reader is familiar with Hugo’s epic novel, such as myself, there will be a whole new appreciation for the story to be had by the end of this book – whether you’re able to relate it to contemporary religious and social and political concerns, or you simply gain more of a desire to discover the book for yourself in the first place.

At a mere 182 pages thick, 52 Little Lessons from Les Miserables by Bob Welch is an easy read – perfect for nightly bedtime reading, or it could even be used as a devotional as well. There is also a full page of discussion questions at the end for book clubs or church Bible study groups.

Whether or not you’re familiar with Les Miserables, if you are a believer in God I encourage you to pick up a copy of 52 Little Lessons from Les Miserables by Bob Welch. Your life will be all the richer for it, I guarantee!
